Why it surfacedThe project is built around a striking archival absence: Pan Am's auction preserved thousands of boxes for legal and marketing records, but only 13 for engineering. A former mechanic and his son are trying to recover the shop-floor history before the people who lived it are gone, with contributors retaining their originals and control over how their material is used.
