Why it surfaced

Web Cat turns a forgotten web index into a small ritual: click “knock on the next one” and see whether anybody is still at the door. Its terse status labels—“no answer,” “somebody else,” “still there”—give the archive a gentle, oddly moving presence, while the source material comes from daily NCSA What's New issues preserved through the Internet Archive.
