Why it surfaced

This is unusually specific technical copy, from graphene phase modulation and Mach–Zehnder interferometry to reactive-ion etching in microgravity. AR&D repeatedly insists that experiments should be narrow enough to fail, while keeping much of the underlying work proprietary—a convincing and slightly theatrical portrait of research before the product exists.
