Chandra Grows: A Garden Measured in Photographs
A Pilsen garden archive documenting nine growing seasons, sixteen crops, and 2,236 photographs from 990 square feet of Chicago soil.
Field notes
The archive separates cultivation from documentation: 2017 was reportedly farmed fully but has no surviving photographs, while 2025 contains 867 images. A seasonal grid shows when photographs exist rather than implying that undocumented years were less productive. The project also preserves the garden’s physical method, including raised ridges for wet springs and a repeated sequence that ends with food being frozen, pickled, dried, or shared.
