DEVANI’s proposed route to neonatal protection runs through maternal antibodies transferred across the placenta, with direct neonatal vaccination described as too late for disease in the first days of life. The consortium collected disease-associated GBS strains and maternal sera across Europe, then planned strain typing, antigen analysis, antibody-threshold assessment, and adjuvant and delivery-system studies in vitro and in mice.
