Tapedeck Gives Old Video Tapes Their Dates Back
A trio of native Mac apps captures MiniDV and HDV tapes, mirrors their folders, and converts or catalogs the resulting files.
Field notes
Capture is designed to run through a box of tapes unattended, handling transport controls and logging the tape’s transport, timecode, detected shots, and embedded date. Its date-based filing depends on information written into the video frames, while a three-minute gap defines a new shot. Mirror uses dated quarantine folders rather than deletion, and Proxy can watch folders, batch-convert files to H.264 / .mp4, and read a catalogue directly from disk.
