INSTAR: a reporting standard for invertebrate welfare
An 18-item standard and set of free tools for documenting how research invertebrates are obtained, housed, handled, and disposed of.
Field notes
The workflow treats a completed INSTAR.csv as the durable research object: each row corresponds to one reporting item, while the report column records the study-specific sentence or two. Items that do not apply receive “NA,” preserving the distinction between omission and irrelevance. The site also describes a generated one-page summary figure and R functions for validation, reading deposited sheets, and auditing literature. Its coverage is split between laboratory and field work, with five welfare domains and three cross-cutting foundations.
