Layline, a Sailing Replay Lab

layline.site Observed source
Editorial interest 84/100 Selection signal · not a rating of the site

An open-source prototype that turns sparse sailing-race position updates into synchronized 2D and 3D replays.

Landing page captured for the 2026-08-26 issue.

Field notes

Layline generates repeatable fleet data rather than ingesting live races: six simulated boats run at 20 Hz, with four recorded positions per second forming the replay input. The shared clock lets scrubbing update the 3D scene, 2D chart, instruments, and standings together, while analysis tools inspect VMG, maneuvers, speed loss, and fleet position. Its engineering notes also document practical rendering decisions, including concentrating water detail near the camera and reducing scene detail after slow frames.
