Shade Matcher, for the tyranny of foundation undertones

shadematch.beauty Observed source
Editorial interest 78/100 Selection signal · not a rating of the site

A browser-based tool that samples skin from a photo and compares it with real foundation shades.

Landing page captured for the 2026-08-26 issue.

Field notes

Shade Matcher samples a user-selected point from a photo, then ranks foundation shades using Delta E 2000 and places the sample on a light-to-deep scale. Its comparison set comes from hex values extracted from brand and retailer swatch images in The Pudding’s public foundation-shade dataset rather than official manufacturer specifications. The site says sampling occurs in the browser, while Pro access costs $5 monthly for unlimited spot selections.
