The Canal That Ran 86 Miles
An interactive map traces the vanished New Haven and Northampton Canal from New Haven to Northampton using lidar, historic maps, and aerial imagery.
Field notes
The project combines present-day terrain evidence with historical sources rather than treating the canal as a simple line on a map. Surviving ruins can be examined through lidar, while sections without visible remains are reconstructed from Carl Walter’s reference maps and selected CT ECO aerial imagery. The current dataset includes feeder canals and points of interest, but not canal dimensions, basins, or every section, and the page explicitly identifies the work as unfinished.
