Foyer: rehearsal for the conversations that are hard to start
A forthcoming iPhone app lets people who stutter rehearse conversations with simulated baristas, receptionists, interviewers, and other conversational partners.
Field notes
Foyer structures practice as a five-level ladder containing thirty scenes, beginning with simple exchanges and progressing toward phone conversations and speaking in a room with other people. Each step requires practice on two separate days, and the only post-rehearsal question concerns words the user wanted to say but skipped or replaced. The site reports a 51-second test silence without interruption and says progress remains on the phone rather than in an account.
