Nearest Land Maps What Lies Across the Water
An interactive 3D globe answers which country lies across the water—or over land—from any selected point.
Field notes
Nearest Land offers three distinct geographic rules rather than one universal distance calculation: Coast follows bearings from a shoreline, Anywhere starts at the exact selected point, and Over land refuses to cross water. The page also documents important resolution limits, including a roughly 10 km grid, quarter-degree bearing intervals, and small islands being represented as single cells. Its data provenance is unusually explicit: Natural Earth 1:10m outlines, world-atlas, three.js, and topojson-client are all named.
