A calibrated iPhone instrument that watches for nearby magnetic-field changes and compares them with a local baseline.

Landing page captured for the 2026-09-03 issue.

Field notes

The proposed instrument captures a local magnetic baseline, then asks the user to move the same iPhone slowly around an object and compare the change. Its example readout shows a 47.2 µT baseline, a +38.4 µT change, and updates at 15 readings per second. The page distinguishes materials likely to affect a phone magnetometer from metals it cannot reliably identify, and says raw readings, baselines, scan history, and completed values stay on the device.
