Art for Spooks Turns Surveillance into a Feedback Machine
An augmented art book combines alleged NSA documents, folklore, custom software, and a tablet app that generates and shares randomized images and texts.
Field notes
The interactive work requires two physical and digital components: a printable book and the Art for Spooks iOS app. Reading through the tablet interface produces randomized images and texts that can be uploaded to social platforms, with additional surveillance-related material placed in image metadata. The project lists a 320mm by 214mm handbound edition, found images and text, custom software, exhibition history, and publicly available app code; an Android release and print-on-demand edition are described as under development.
