The journal organizes shore observation into three registers: species, watch points, and seasons and sea state. Its location register names five viewing positions, from sheltered Rhue and Loch Broom to the exposed Butt of Lewis, while the species register orders ten animals by how often a shore watcher encounters them. The entries focus on practical visibility—fin, blow, roll, swell, glare, height, and shelter—rather than promising sightings from a boat.
