Mattersburg’s Touchable Main Square
An interactive exhibition reconstructs an Austrian town’s 1930s main square as a 3D-printed model on a wooden base.
Field notes
The project combines a tactile 3D-printed town model with NFC-linked digital records, allowing a visitor to move from a building’s physical outline to historical images and resident or business histories. Its reconstruction method uses cadastral plans, photographs, postcards, and address books, while separating documented features from assumptions. The current main-square model is explicitly a prototype; expansion to other parts of Mattersburg and a permanent installation are tied to pending funding applications.
