Ndlela — one health record that follows the person

A South African health-record concept designed to keep a person’s care history connected across practices, hospitals, pharmacies, laboratories and households.

Landing page captured for the 2026-09-05 issue.

Field notes

Ndlela proposes a person- and household-owned record assembled from routine care events rather than from a patient’s manual recollection. Its model gives different participants—clinicians, pharmacies, laboratories, hospitals and community health workers—access to the same record under permissions the person can withdraw. The site draws a firm boundary around four roles: repository, conduit, messenger and facilitator; it does not claim to author clinical opinions. The project is explicitly in build, so these workflows remain stated plans rather than demonstrated functionality.
