KidDOS, a Small Computer for Curious Kids
An open-source pretend computer that teaches children to explore shells, files, programming, and hardware without access to the internet or anything important to break.
Field notes
The environment is organized as a finite filesystem rather than an open-ended web experience: lessons, games, manuals, progress, and high scores are all exposed as files that can be listed, read, copied, and changed. Its progression moves from shell vocabulary and a text adventure to BASIC, then sandboxed C and Go compiled to WebAssembly; the page says the virtual drive lives in one SQLite file and can be reset from parent mode. Later ARM assembly and a debugger are presented as planned stages.
