Chickadee Keeps Page Reading on Your Machine

usechickadee.com Observed source
Editorial interest 82/100 Selection signal · not a rating of the site

A browser extension that reads web pages aloud locally, highlights each spoken sentence, and works offline after its initial voice download.

Landing page captured for the 2026-09-06 issue.

Field notes

Chickadee uses WebGPU to run the Kokoro speech model inside the browser, rather than transmitting the page to a reading service. The page describes sentence-level highlighting, right-click playback from a chosen word, and a one-time voice download of about 310 MB. It says later playback works offline and identifies Chrome-based browsers with WebGPU as the target environment, while the installation link is still marked “soon.”
