Murmello Gives Your Mac a Local Dictation Layer
Murmello is free, open-source dictation for Apple silicon Macs that transcribes speech locally and pastes the result into whatever app you're using.
Field notes
Murmello uses a keyboard shortcut to start dictation inside a Mac text field, then returns the transcript to the active application rather than requiring a separate editor. The page specifies macOS 14 or later on Apple silicon and says the initial model is 227.5 MB. A local editing option can remove fillers, add punctuation, or structure the transcript as Markdown, while the user can also keep the words closer to their spoken form.
