Besra puts speech annotation inside Python
An open-source desktop tool for editing and analysing time-aligned speech, with Python plugins and support for Praat and ELAN files.
Field notes
Besra combines a desktop annotation interface with a Python-native core: readers, writers, signal analysis, and plugins use the same environment rather than an inter-process bridge or separate scripting language. It preserves established research workflows by opening and saving Praat TextGrid, ELAN EAF, and five-column TSV files. The interface places waveform, spectrogram, pitch, formants, amplitude, and annotations on one time axis, with optional quality and surprisal lanes.
