Skogode’s Field Guide to Ceramic Tiles
A Czech-language workshop guide to making stove tiles and handmade ceramic wall tiles, from clay preparation through firing, glazing, and installation.
Field notes
The guide follows tile production through material testing, forming, drying, firing, surface decoration, and installation rather than treating the finished tile as an isolated object. It recommends test pieces for shrinkage, edge behavior, drying rate, fired color, and absorption, and distinguishes repeatable plaster-mold work from hand-cut pieces used in restoration. A dedicated section explains the hollow rear structure of stove tiles and how uneven wall thickness can create warping during drying.
