Vertex AGI's Small-Model Lab
An open research site for small, single-purpose language models, held-out evaluations, and a from-scratch mixture-of-experts experiment.
Field notes
Vertex AGI separates its work into named families rather than presenting one general-purpose model: Prism covers narrow specialists, Amethyst covers chat, Copal covers tool use, and Aquamarine covers coding. Quartz is the counterexample, using randomly initialized weights and a DeepSeek-style mixture-of-experts design; the homepage lists about 1.03 billion total parameters, 394 million active per token, and a supervised fine-tuning run at 89.5% completion.
