An open heat-and-canopy mapping tool ranks neighborhood areas by tree-planting need across five California geographies.

Landing page captured for the 2026-09-14 issue.

Field notes

The tool offers five geographic builds, ranging from a county-wide view of 2,697 areas to smaller city and subregional maps at 0.04-square-mile resolution. Its inputs combine the USFS / CAL FIRE 2022 aerial canopy classification, Landsat 8/9 thermal readings, ACS population estimates, Census air-conditioning estimates, and OpenStreetMap walking routes. Heat is deliberately excluded from some regional scores when geography would confound heat with distance from the shore.
