Mapping Erasure — Panama Canal Zone
An interactive historical GIS reconstructs Panama Canal Zone settlements that were flooded, depopulated, relocated, or renamed.
Field notes
The interface distinguishes places with coordinates from documented places that could not be located, while also preserving source disagreement instead of forcing a single position. Its controls compare reconstruction, archival density, displacement, archival condition, and absence status across 1850–2025. A September 2026 note records that remotely searchable material in the corpus is overwhelmingly United States-origin or held by United States universities, with Panamanian archives contributing catalog metadata.
