The Bench Dragon of Huizhou
A fieldwork-driven cultural feature documenting the HuiZhou bench dragon, a lantern procession assembled from household-made wooden benches.
Field notes
The feature maps a village procession from its physical parts to its social life: a household supplies one wooden bench, three red lamps sit on each section, and the linked benches form the dragon body. Its timeline records an 18-year interruption after 1988 and a 2005 reconstruction based on elders’ memories. The accompanying research laboratory lists 136 valid questionnaires, 10 interview subjects, and 175 qualitative codes, while the works section catalogs three films, five albums, and 85 photographs.
