Colombia se puebla, one municipality at a time
An interactive map animates the founding of Colombia’s 1,122 municipalities from 1507 to 2019, with sources, altitude, naming clues, and confidence markers.
Field notes
The visualization combines municipal boundaries from geoBoundaries with founding or parish-erection dates drawn from Spanish Wikipedia and Wikidata, then lets visitors inspect each record’s source support. Its evidence layer is unusually explicit: 87 conflicts are marked, only 121 dates have a cited document, and 349 municipality names remain unclassified. The page also distinguishes documented data from its nearest-neighbor expansion lines, which it describes as a reconstruction rather than a historical route.
