Nephoscope maps lightning from orbit—with the limits marked
An interactive preview for exploring recorded NOAA satellite lightning observations across the Americas.
- For
- People exploring recorded satellite lightning
- Worth noticing
- The preview labels its dots as estimated optical centers, not ground impacts, and says quiet intervals cannot serve as an all-clear.
Field notes
The page explains that GLM detects total lightning, including both in-cloud and ground-involving flashes, but cannot identify the type of an individual flash. Map points fade with age, and the preview is sampled in 20-second segments every five minutes; the site says that is not enough to verify a continuous 30-minute quiet interval. Its planned US advisory region is clipped to satellite coverage, with some areas, including much of Alaska, outside the field of view.
