High Mountains Archive: extraction, residue, and the Ardennes
Artist Olivia Joret’s situated research archive follows the material histories of extraction and industry into the Ardennes forest.
- For
- Readers of contemporary art and landscape research
- Worth noticing
- The archive began with a Belgian former industrial site now described as a nature park, where deep clay pits stand in for mountains.
Field notes
The research began at Hoge Bergen, a Belgian neighbourhood and former industrial site whose name means “High Mountains”; the page notes that the landscape has no mountains, but deep clay pits. Its later work extends into the Ardennes, where the archive attends to industrial residues and post-military infrastructure. Tiny Infiltration is described as a roughly two-minute film built around the sound of water entering a hollowed-out high-security storage complex.
