Box to Curb wants appliance lifespans to count
A household appliance log that aims to turn owners’ records into public estimates of how long different models last.
- For
- Households tracking appliance records and repair history
- Worth noticing
- A model’s figures stay unpublished until 30 owners have logged it; the site says rankings are never paid for.
Field notes
The proposed dataset depends on owner check-ins rather than lab testing: contributors enter a brand, model, and approximate purchase date, then report annually on whether the appliance still runs. If it fails, they can record the failure and whether repair was worthwhile. The homepage lists eight appliance categories, but each currently says there are not enough owners yet. The site says public figures require 30 owners per model and that individual files stay private.
