How built-up is the Balaton shore?
An interactive map measures buildings, ports, piers, roads and rail near Lake Balaton’s shoreline, using OpenStreetMap data.
- For
- Balaton residents, visitors and shoreline advocates
- Worth noticing
- The map flags that half of the mapped footpaths lack a surface tag, limiting what its counts can say about paved shoreline routes.
Field notes
The map measures distance from points along a simplified shoreline to mapped buildings, ports, railways and paved roads, then offers separate north- and south-shore views and a town ranking. Users can toggle beach and infrastructure layers; small buildings on beach grounds can also be excluded from the counts. The methodology notes that mapped seawalls and paved paths are incomplete, so the results describe the current OSM record rather than a complete inventory of shoreline construction.
