Times New Woman: a typeface that makes absence visible
This editorial typography project turns official Spanish femicide figures into a downloadable variable font that inserts gaps into text.
- For
- Designers using a data-driven Spanish typeface
- Worth noticing
- The page links its annual figures to Spain’s Ministry of Equality and says the font is freely downloadable under a license.
Field notes
The page attributes its figures to Spain’s Ministry of Equality and provides annual counts from 2003 through 2026. Its variable styles map yearly frequencies to missing characters; the example for 2026 removes one letter per nine characters. The project says the font is based on TeX Gyre Termes, itself based on URW Nimbus Roman No9 L, and is freely downloadable under the GFL license. One table entry lists 2018 as “1 cada 57 días,” an apparent inconsistency with the 52 deaths shown.
