Kabut maps Indonesia’s fires and haze
An independent tracker maps satellite hotspot detections across Indonesia alongside air-quality information for cities in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
- For
- People tracking Indonesian fires and smoke
- Worth noticing
- Detections within 1.5 km and 48 hours are grouped; fixed-point heat lasting five or more days is flagged as a possible flare or industrial source.
Field notes
The tracker processes VIIRS satellite detections, removes low-confidence points, and groups nearby observations across a 48-hour window. Its methodology also flags possible smouldering peat and industrial heat as interpretations, not confirmed causes. Kabut warns that clouds, smoke, infrequent satellite passes, and coarse pixels can hide or misplace activity; its province data also does not yet separate the 2022 Papua provinces.
