Toca do Coelho: a community rebuilt from ash
An Algarve mountain community documents its permaculture land project, seasonal gatherings and invitation for residents and visitors to apply.
- For
- Prospective residents, seasonal visitors, and volunteers
- Worth noticing
- Its November gathering brings up to 40–50 volunteers for two weeks; 15–20 stay the whole month.
Field notes
The site traces the project from a Dutch collective’s first visits in 2012 through a 2018 wildfire that destroyed its buildings and trees. It describes current shared facilities, fruit and herb gardens, agroforestry and indigenous-tree rewilding, while distinguishing those from ambitions such as rebuilding the original house, establishing more orchards and buying neighboring land. A four-person council, called the Pine Cones, holds the project alongside returning and international members.
