dockma: a one-job Docker VM for Apple Silicon
An early-development Docker runtime for Apple Silicon Macs that runs the engine in a lightweight Linux VM using Apple’s Virtualization.framework.
- For
- Apple Silicon Mac users replacing Docker Desktop
- Worth noticing
- The guest is built from one Dockerfile, with a Linux 6.18.57 kernel, BusyBox initramfs, and checksum-verified release inputs.
Field notes
The guest is assembled from a custom Linux 6.18.57 kernel configured from tinyconfig and a BusyBox initramfs; its root filesystem is rebuilt at each boot, while Docker data lives on a separate sparse disk. On the Mac side, launchd keeps the VM running, virtiofs exposes the home directory at the same path, and published container ports are reachable through localhost. The page says release artifacts are checksum-verified and carries build provenance attestations.
