Given a Garden’s right-to-know index
Given a Garden is building a state-by-state index of laws and public records governing what people can learn about food production.
- For
- People researching food transparency and state law
- Worth noticing
- No state scores are posted yet; publication waits for a second reader to verify each score against its source.
Field notes
The first edition groups 12 questions into four categories and scores each from 0 (the law closes the door) to 4 (open, with nothing in the way). Laws are dated from their effective dates, and court rulings count when they stop enforcement statewide. A separate planned Public Plate effort would have volunteers request public-institution food-purchase records, count animal products using USDA averages, and publish the results alongside plant-protein spending.
