RailcarID, a field guide to freight-car marks
A lookup tool and field guide for identifying North American freight cars and understanding their reporting marks, stencils, and placards.
- For
- Railfans, model-railroaders, and small shippers
- Worth noticing
- The mark list is compiled from Wikipedia under CC BY-SA 4.0; RailcarID says it contains no equipment-register fields.
Field notes
Search accepts a reporting mark alone or a mark plus car number; mark pages identify owner listings and explain suffixes such as X, U, and Z. The stencil guide distinguishes nominal capacity (CAPY) from legal load limit (LD LMT), and covers inspection panels, AEI tags, and tank-car specifications. The project says uploaded scan photos are not stored; sightings and map locations are rounded to roughly 10 km, and the mark data excludes equipment-register fields.
