A searchable catalog of ways to add local control, custom firmware, and other capabilities to devices you own.

Landing page captured for the 2026-10-27 issue.

For: People seeking local control or custom firmware for owned devices
Worth noticing: The homepage reports 34 devices checked by hand and 4,867 open projects indexed.

Field notes

The index combines short device summaries with counts of related ideas and projects, and sorts visible entries from A downward. Its examples distinguish different routes to control: OpenWrt replaces router firmware, Shelly devices expose HTTP and MQTT APIs, and the Steam Deck offers an officially supported Linux desktop. The homepage also links to dated news and guides, including a robot-vacuum network investigation.
