Wildfire Data, with files you can cite
An open API and set of downloadable datasets combine satellite fire detections with official incident records, perimeters, and smoke-plume data.
- For
- Developers and analysts tracking North American fires
- Worth noticing
- Detections in the same or adjacent 1 km grid cells within 48 hours merge into one event; duplicate satellite views on one overpass count once.
Field notes
Active-fire events combine NASA FIRMS VIIRS detections with NIFC WFIGS incident and perimeter records, plus Natural Earth state and province boundaries. The page specifies that the current US incident source may drop an incident 3 to 14 days after its last update; a separate perimeter archive retains shapes and snapshots so fire growth can be followed after removal from the current layer. Smoke labels are visual density categories, not surface-concentration measurements.
