MarsGPS: directions for the red planet
An interactive Mars map plots routes between selected locations, with terrain-aware directions, elevation profiles, and estimated travel times for several kinds of traveler.
- For
- Mars enthusiasts and planetary route planners
- Worth noticing
- Routes longer than about 450 km show their most rugged 400 km as a labeled “Highlight.”
Field notes
The page names its terrain sources, including the Viking MDIM 2.1 mosaic, MOLA elevation data, and a Murray Lab mosaic of Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Context Camera images. It distinguishes the roughly 10 km global grid from a finer 200 m blended model requested from NASA Solar System Treks for a chosen route; if that request cannot be reached, the profile stays on the grid. The site says route coordinates, and nothing else, are sent with that request.
