The receipt-to-recipe calculator
Cook the Bill compares a fast-food receipt with the estimated cost of making a similar meal at home, including the grocery-store trip.
- For
- People comparing a fast-food order with cooking at home
- Worth noticing
- It separates per-serving ingredient cost from the whole-register trip, and suppresses headline totals when key ingredients lack price data.
Field notes
The calculator asks for the receipt total, number of diners, restaurant, and selected items, then maps the order to a closest home recipe. Its accounting distinguishes ingredients consumed from the whole-unit quantities purchased at the store: the former yields a per-serving figure, while the latter estimates the register trip and leftover. It draws baseline grocery prices from BLS data and can use optional ZIP-based Kroger-family pricing to fill certain missing ingredients; those live prices are not used in share outputs.
