Statute Atlas measures New Zealand’s statute book
An interactive analysis of New Zealand Acts, Bills and secondary legislation, organized into six chapters on volume, life cycle, process, power, drafting and substance.
- For
- New Zealand law researchers and civic data readers
- Worth noticing
- Its counts come from pattern-matching Parliamentary Counsel Office XML, intended for comparisons across eras rather than exact tallies.
Field notes
The chapters organize questions about legislation into interactive charts, including changes in the length of Acts and the stages Bills pass through. The project attributes its dataset to the Parliamentary Counsel Office’s legislation data and legislation.govt.nz, and says it stores derived statistics rather than republishing legislative text. Three further analyses are described as dependent on joining other public records, including Ministry of Justice reports and Hansard votes.
