KM Mesh: a solar radio network for two Minnesota towns
KM Mesh describes a community Meshtastic network intended to carry text messages around Kasson and Mantorville when cell service or power is down.
- For
- Kasson–Mantorville residents with high outdoor sites
- Worth noticing
- Hosts offer a high, south-facing site; the project says it supplies the lunchbox-sized solar unit and handles installation.
Field notes
Each node is described as a weatherproof, lunchbox-sized box with a built-in solar panel and battery, running Meshtastic over license-free radio. Messages from a handheld radio or phone are meant to hop between nodes; Wi-Fi is optional and only for reporting a node’s status. The signup form asks prospective hosts about elevation, southern sun exposure, property permission, and nearby power, while the project says it supplies equipment and installation.
