PHASE asks whether you can beat the clock
PHASE is a prediction experiment that lets people commit to a 12-word guess before a scheduled phrase is generated.
- For
- Curious readers of randomness and prediction experiments
- Worth noticing
- The site says local guesses stay on-device; official attempts upload only a timestamped commitment before phrase generation.
Field notes
A browser can hash a 12-word guess with a private secret; the local mode keeps that guess on-device. For an official attempt, PHASE uploads only the commitment and records its timestamp before the scheduled challenge. At the scheduled minute, the site combines NIST Randomness Beacon and drand values with a value committed earlier, then offers a public record for reproducing the SHA-256 result. The page identifies this as version 0.1.0; its challenge panel currently says “Loading challenge…”.
