Pickled Wrath: a romance-scam guide with a gherkin narrator
A five-stage field guide and red-flag check for recognizing romance scams and finding practical next steps.
- For
- People worried about an online romance and requests for money
- Worth noticing
- Its ten-item red-flag check includes failed meetings, urgent gift-card or crypto requests, and firewalled alternate accounts.
Field notes
The guide frames the alleged pattern as five stages: fast, tailored attention; an early illness story; escalating requests; postponed meetings; and separate accounts for different audiences. Its narrator is explicitly described as invented, while the pattern is presented as real. The ten-item check includes warning signs such as requests for gift cards or crypto, pressure for secrecy, and affection that spikes after a payment. The page also advises contacting a bank and preserving receipts, and links to several national fraud-reporting and support organizations.
