Shima Yumita, a Village-by-Village Record of Kikai Island Speech
A Japanese-language learning site for the endangered island language spoken in Kikai Town, using regional audio and text lessons.
Why it surfaced
Shima Yumita preserves differences in pronunciation and phrasing across Kikai Island’s villages rather than flattening them into one generic dialect. The project currently offers materials for three areas, with more regions marked for release, making it both a practical classroom resource and a record of language at risk.
