Mengfan He Turns Labels Into Material

Why it surfaced

He’s interested in what labels permit and constrain: one project reverses the gaze so plant-like creatures classify humans, while another uses twelve cardboard figures to examine the objects by which marriage partners are measured. The portfolio gives each work a concrete material and social premise, rather than leaving the artist statement in abstraction.
