The first mode preserves the original letters and adds zero-width control marks; the second converts characters to contextual Arabic presentation forms and fixes visual order for software that lacks shaping support. The documentation also describes idempotent cleanup of previously inserted control characters and gives a practical boundary: design-mode output should not be used where copying or search must work.
