Third Pole Watch, listening for Himalayan collapses

thirdpole.watch Observed source
Editorial interest 88/100 Selection signal · not a rating of the site

An open-source seismic monitoring project that detects possible glacier collapses, ice-rock avalanches, and debris flows on public waveform feeds.

Landing page captured for the 2026-09-02 issue.

Field notes

The system combines public feeds from GEOFON, EarthScope, and community Raspberry Shake stations, then looks for the long-period, sustained signal associated with mass movements. Its published replay uses four open stations and reports coincident triggers on II.NIL, G.WUS, and GE.NPW at T+349 seconds. The detector remains an uncalibrated v0 heuristic, and the site says every future candidate—including false or ambiguous ones—will enter a permanent public ledger for human review.
