trynix: 13 years of Nix history in one browser tab

trynix.dev Observed source

A browser-based Nix package explorer that boots historical nixpkgs packages inside a local QEMU virtual machine.

Landing page captured for the 2026-09-06 issue.

Field notes

trynix resolves package specifications against a 13-year nixpkgs history, fetches their closures from binary caches, and places the results in a browser-run x86_64 Linux VM. QEMU is compiled to WebAssembly, while extra caches can be supplied with a URL and public key; the page says signatures are checked during closure traversal. Packages need not have coexisted in one nixpkgs release, allowing combinations such as historical Python and newer tools.
